Teaching Methods and Assessment top

In general, class structure and teaching methods emphasise real advertising, marketing, business and managerial situations because the study of advertising is concerned not only with the acquisition of theory but also with its evaluation and application in practice.

The teaching and learning methods include but are not limited to lectures, seminars, case studies, scenarios, guest lectures, problem solving exercises, student-centred active learning, and oral presentations.

Lectures will be used to explain and develop knowledge and skills identified as being important to advertising and marketing. You will receive relevant information, tasks and source material in lectures that will enable self-directed learning.

Seminars are used to supplement student learning, these tend to focus on applied exercises.

Students will have access, on and off-campus, to relevant online texts and databases, including WARC – the World Advertising Research Centre via the new state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre, and to use the extensive learning materials online.

You will find much course material distributed via the University’s WebCT system. This will include lecture notes, references, and any web sites or discussion groups relevant to advertising and marketing.

Assessment
Most modules have a combination of coursework and examination at the end of the semester.

Various assessment methods are used throughout the advertising programmes.

Some current examples of assessment include: the preparation of an Advertising Brief for an Ad Agency;

Project Management – to complete a Market Research Survey for a client;

Strategic Brand Review – to make a pitch and present a storyboard for a client.

Media Plan – to prepare a media plan for a [real] client.

Placement top

Optional Work Experience or Study Abroad Year
In Year three, students have the option to complete a 48 week work experience (Diploma in Industrial Studies) or a semester of study abroad (Diploma in Area Studies). By choosing to follow this route the length of the programme is now four years instead of three years.

Students who opt to complete a 48 week work placement can select a work placement locally, nationally or internationally. Successful completion of the placement year leads to the award of the Diploma in Industrial Studies upon graduation.

Alternatively, you may complete a semester of academic study at an approved university located in a foreign country. Successful completion of the study abroad year leads to the award of the Diploma in Area Studies upon graduation. The possibilities for student exchanges include agreements with universities in other parts of Europe within the ERASMUS scheme, and with the USA under the Business Education Initiative.
